PG&E Flags Possible Weekend Power Shutoffs in Northern California

The utility cites forecast dry, gusty winds that raise wildfire risk.

Overview

  • PG&E’s seven-day outlook shows an elevated risk of public-safety shutoffs from Sunday through Tuesday in parts of Colusa, Glenn, Lake, Napa, Sonoma, Tehama and Yolo counties.
  • PG&E has not scheduled outages yet and says shutoffs are a tool to prevent sparks from power lines during periods of high wind and low humidity.
  • Forecasts call for coastal and ridge gusts of 35 to 45 mph with isolated peaks near 50 mph, and PG&E notes some higher terrain could see bursts above 55 mph.
  • Forecasters expect the strongest winds late Saturday into early Sunday as offshore flow dries the air and lowers humidity, which raises the chance a small spark could spread.
  • The National Weather Service reports elevated fire weather through Monday across the interior Bay Area and Central Coast, along with rough seas, blowing sand and dangerous surf at west-facing beaches, while PG&E urges customers to sign up for address-specific and Medical Baseline alerts.
