Pew Survey Finds U.S. Views of Israel Turn Mostly Negative as Confidence in Netanyahu Drops

Fielded during the Iran war, the survey captures a broad generational break with past support.

Overview

  • The new Pew Research Center survey released Tuesday found that 60% of U.S. adults view Israel unfavorably and 59% lack confidence in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on world affairs.
  • Across both parties, adults under 50 now rate Israel and Netanyahu negatively, including 57% of Republicans ages 18 to 49 who view Israel unfavorably.
  • More than half of Americans, 55%, say they do not trust President Donald Trump to make good decisions about the U.S.-Israel relationship.
  • The poll was conducted March 23 to 29 during the U.S.-Israeli war in Iran, and Middle East Eye reports the fighting has killed more than 4,000 people and pushed up oil prices while damaging key infrastructure.
  • In related fallout, National Counterterrorism Center director Joseph Kent resigned in mid-March and said an Israeli-aligned echo chamber pushed the U.S. into the Iran war, according to his letter reported by Middle East Eye.
