Pew Global Survey Finds U.S. Stands Out for ‘Freedom’ as Source of National Pride

Open-ended responses from 33,486 adults in 25 countries reveal stark U.S. partisan gaps alongside unusually high nonresponse in India.

Overview

  • America is the only country where freedom is the most-cited source of pride, named by 22% of U.S. respondents.
  • About one-in-five Americans say they are not proud of the United States, and U.S. respondents are among the most likely to offer negative comments when asked about pride.
  • Few Americans cite pride in core institutions or heritage, with just 8% mentioning the political system, 3% mentioning history, and very low mentions of arts and culture.
  • U.S. responses show a pronounced partisan split, as Republicans are twice as likely as Democrats to cite freedom (32% vs. 15%), and among the 6% who name a leader, about 60% mention President Donald Trump.
  • India records low mentions of culture (8%) and history (2%) and the highest nonresponse rate (31%), reflecting unusually diffuse or withheld expressions of pride in the open-ended format.
