Petacciato Landslide Closes A14 and Bari–Pescara Rail, Severing the Adriatic Link

Officials warn repairs could take weeks or months.

Overview

  • The long-watched slope at Petacciato, which reactivated Tuesday after heavy rain, set off sensors that prompted a precautionary shutdown of the A14 between Vasto Sud and Termoli and halted trains between Termoli and Montenero di Bisaccia.
  • Traffic backed up for kilometers and hundreds of rail passengers were left waiting at Termoli station as Trenitalia arranged replacement buses and long‑distance trains were rerouted via Rome and Caserta.
  • Road managers reported cracks in the A14 pavement and rail staff noted track deformation of about 10 centimeters, with engineers, geologists, and fire brigade drones inspecting the area.
  • Local officials ordered evacuations in the upper part of Petacciato and the national Civil Protection committee met in Rome at 4 p.m. to coordinate detours and emergency measures.
  • The landslide is among Europe’s largest and has reactivated for more than a century, and the Civil Protection chief said reopening will not start until the ground stops moving.
