Peta Offers €500 Reward After Malteser Puppy Is Rescued From Göttingen Paper Bin

The case has prompted a police probe under the animal-protection law with a public call for tips.

Overview

  • Waste-collection staff discovered the visibly weakened puppy around 7 a.m. on Dec. 2 during a check of a paper container on Straße Zum Leineufer.
  • The animal was trembling, emitted a strong odor, and had a secretion-sealed eye before being taken for veterinary care and then placed in Tierheim Duderstadt.
  • Shelter staff say the roughly four-week-old male, now called Freddy, has inflamed eyes and ears and a heavy worm infestation, is on antibiotics, and is eating on his own.
  • The bin owner reported the dog was not in the container over the weekend, and the GEB said it is highly unlikely the puppy climbed in by itself.
  • Police are investigating a suspected violation of the Tierschutzgesetz and ask witnesses to contact Göttingen police at 0551/491-2115, as Peta offers a €500 tip reward.
