Overview
- Peta has given its Hero to Animals award to North Berwick RNLI and coastguard for a rescue at Seacliff Beach in February 2026.
- Sparkle, a Weimaraner, fell about four metres from a harbour wall, and her 73-year-old owner, David Hall, climbed down a ladder and held her collar as help approached, with a second bystander also entering the sea.
- Crews reached the harbour through heavy surf and used an animal rescue bag to hoist the dog to safety.
- Station leaders said they felt honored and pointed to more than 100 callouts last year, showing how often volunteers face dangerous conditions.
- Peta praised the team for preventing a tragedy, and rescuers used the case to urge walkers to keep dogs on leads near waves and to call 999 for the Coastguard rather than entering the water.
