Peru’s Top Prosecutor Seeks S/760 Million to Avert Collapse of Key Cases and Oversight

The plea tests whether the Executive will fund prosecutors to avert stalled cases.

Overview

  • New Attorney General Tomás Gálvez asked the Executive for an extra S/760 million, warning that probes and the internal watchdog could grind to a halt without the money.
  • He said the investigation into sexual abuse of Awajún minors in Condorcanqui only has funding through December 2025, which could interrupt work with victims if no transfer arrives.
  • Gálvez warned that the Public Ministry may shut offices as staff leave for lack of support, and he cited a shortage of experts that has stalled between 4,000 and 5,000 forensic reports.
  • He said the National Control Authority, which polices and sanctions prosecutors, could be the first unit to close because it lacks a direct budget and now depends on thin internal transfers.
  • RPP reported risks to the legal medicine and forensics units and to more than four thousand contract workers, while Caretas noted Gálvez rejects political reform plans and La República highlighted backlash over earlier moves to shelve high‑profile cases.
