Overview
- Sabancaya, which erupted Sunday at 11:52 a.m. local time, sent ash and gas toward the southwest, west and northwest.
- Forecasts pointed to possible ash fall in Lluta, Huambo, Cabanaconde and Tapay, along with nearby settlements.
- The IGP reported the event fits the volcano’s expected activity under an orange alert, with ash columns near 2,000 meters above the crater.
- Authorities urged people to stay more than 12 km from the crater, wear masks and eye protection, cover water supplies, and shelter animals.
- So far this year there have been 10 ash-producing blasts, six in March, and dispersion from Sunday’s event may reach 30 km, which can foul air, water and pasture downwind.
