Overview
- Mexico’s seismic service recorded several minor earthquakes Monday in Chiapas, Oaxaca, Guerrero, Veracruz and Baja California Sur, none strong enough to activate the SASMEX public alert.
- Peru’s geophysical institute reported a magnitude 4.0 near San Juan in Nasca, Ica, at 40 km depth with intensity II–III, and local authorities reported no damage or injuries.
- Agencies remain in monitoring mode, with SSN and IGP posting real-time event data and USGS and ShakeAlert offering U.S. maps and early warnings to mobile phones.
- Mexico’s frequent shaking comes from the grinding of the Pacific, Rivera, Cocos, Caribbean and North American plates along the Ring of Fire, and Mexico City’s soft lakebed soils can amplify even moderate waves.
- Civil protection offices advise residents to keep an emergency kit ready, practice evacuation routes, and rely on official channels, since earthquakes cannot be predicted.
