Peru’s Education Ministry Removes 273 School Workers Over Serious Crimes

Officials pledge stricter local oversight to keep accused staff out of classrooms under a zero-tolerance campaign.

  • Between Oct. 14, 2025 and Feb. 12, 2026, Minedu separated 243 teachers and 30 administrative employees from 250 public schools and 23 private institutions nationwide.
  • Of the 273 cases, 254 involve sexual offenses, with the rest tied to terrorism or its apology (9), sexual propositions to minors via technology (7), drug trafficking (2) and kidnapping (1).
  • Fifty-seven individuals were definitively dismissed following final court convictions, while 216 were preventively suspended as their judicial processes continue.
  • So far in 2026, the ministry has removed 152 workers—134 teachers and 18 administrative staff—with 143 linked to sexual offenses and four to online propositions to minors.
  • Education Minister Jorge Figueroa said the effort seeks to keep schools safe for more than six million students and will reinforce controls in UGELs and regional directorates to prevent re-entry.
