Peru Sets May 1 Start for Machu Picchu Entry Surcharge to Fund Conservation

Officials say the new charge will channel dedicated funding to conserve the protected area.

Overview

  • Peru’s protected areas agency SERNANP confirmed in a Feb. 4 resolution that the surcharge takes effect on May 1, following earlier delays to finalize ticketing and payment systems.
  • Foreign visitors will pay an extra S/11 and Peruvians S/5, lifting typical adult prices to about S/163 for foreigners and S/69 for nationals depending on the chosen circuit.
  • The additional revenue is earmarked exclusively for maintenance, conservation and improved visitor access within the Machu Picchu sanctuary.
  • Entries via the Inca Trail network are excluded from the new charge because they are regulated under separate rules.
  • Local operators Consettur and San Antonio de Torontoy will continue transporting tourists under equal conditions until a formal licensing process is defined to avoid social conflict.
