Peru Reports 43,855 Cases of Violence Against Children in 2025

Plan International is using the figures to expand 'Cambiemos el Juego', a sports‑based program meant to build girls' leadership and strengthen reporting and prevention channels nationwide.

Overview

  • The Programa Nacional Warmi Ñan of the Ministry of Women and Vulnerable Populations recorded 43,855 reported cases affecting children and adolescents in 2025, with sexual violence the largest category at 19,692 cases.
  • MIMP data show sustained vulnerability over time, with government services attending 295,195 cases involving girls, boys and adolescents between 2021 and 2025.
  • News outlets on June 9–10 used the 2025 dataset to illustrate the scale of the problem by estimating an average of about eight girls or adolescents suffering some form of violence every 90 minutes.
  • Plan International has promoted the regional campaign 'Cambiemos el Juego' and the 'Juegos por la Igualdad' program, which combine mixed‑gender sports sessions, classroom work and engagement with teachers and parents to teach warning signs and reporting routes.
  • The campaign reports reaching more than 17,000 students in Loreto, Piura and Cusco in the past year and frames sport as a scalable prevention tool that could increase detection, reporting and protective social norms if linked to wider services and funding.
