Peru Renews Línea 1 Concession and Pledges US$3.887 Billion Modernization

The renewal gives Tren Urbano de Lima a clear mandate to deliver more trains, rebuilt stations and new signaling through a phased program running to 2031.

Overview

  • The Ministry of Transport and Communications renewed Tren Urbano de Lima’s operating permit through 2031 and on Friday announced a US$3.887 billion investment plan to modernize Línea 1.
  • The program aims to expand the fleet to more than 90 trains, fully remodel 26 stations, enlarge depots and workshops at Villa El Salvador and Bayóvar, and build an interchange at 28 de Julio to connect with Línea 2.
  • Officials said the upgrades include a new train control system to cut headways toward 1.5 minutes and raise peak capacity to about 48,000 passengers per hour per direction.
  • To ease crowding while the capital works proceed, the Autoridad de Transporte Urbano scheduled special election-day service for June 7 with 350 trips and will run an interim timetable from June 8 through September that adds 167 weekly trips and increases weekday, Saturday and Sunday runs.
  • Línea 1 is a central urban trunk that links 11 districts, has carried more than 1.6 billion riders in 15 years, and the phased works and procurement now under the renewed concession will be the key items to watch for delivery and passenger impact.
