Overview
- An investor roadshow in Lima, staged Friday by ProInversión, the National Port Authority and the Arequipa government, promoted the Megapuerto de las Américas Corío as a new Pacific gateway for South America.
- Regional officials said they have legally formalized 34,596 hectares for four project areas that include the port core, a logistics platform with a future airport, an industrial zone and a planned city‑port.
- Promoters highlighted a natural depth of 20 to 29 meters at Corío that could handle very large container ships and reduce dredging costs by up to 90% compared with other South American terminals.
- Backers estimate total investment at about US$7 billion with an initial US$650 million phase to start the port core, and they report interest from more than 350 potential investors in countries such as China, the United States and Germany.
- ProInversión and the port authority plan to present a preliminary master plan on May 15, while permits, detailed contracts and financing still need to be arranged as the project remains in the planning stage.
