Peru Maintains El Niño Costero Alert and Issues Coastal Heat Warnings as Mexico Faces Storms and Extreme Heat

ENFEN warns the current weak coastal warming could strengthen to moderate by June–July if Niño 3.4 in the central Pacific turns warmer.

Overview

  • Senamhi issued aviso meteorológico n.°201 for 24–26 May that warns of higher daytime temperatures on the Peruvian coast and sierra with maxima up to about 36 °C plus increased UV and gusty winds.
  • The multisector commission ENFEN kept a national El Niño Costero alert and said the event, now weak, could intensify to moderate between June and July and possibly persist into January 2027 if Niño 3.4 warms.
  • Mexico’s CONAGUA/SMN forecast for Monday, May 25 warned of widespread convective storms, hail and lightning in many states and daytime highs of 40–45 °C in parts of western and southern Mexico.
  • Local forecasts based on AEMET reported warm, mostly dry conditions across Galician municipalities on May 25 with daytime highs in the mid‑20s and low odds of significant rain.
  • Officials say these short‑term hazards — heat, high UV, strong winds, and storm-driven rain or hail — raise near‑term public‑health and flood risks and warrant preparedness measures for vulnerable communities and water managers.
