Overview
- Justice Minister Walter Martínez placed the first stone on December 16 to begin expanding the Pucallpa prison with more than S/134 million in funding for 1,256 new housing units.
- Officials say the build-out is designed to cut severe overcrowding, improve living conditions, strengthen penitentiary security, and support inmates' social reintegration.
- Vice Minister Shadia Valdez led a large-scale search operation at the facility with over 100 agents from INPE, the National Police, and the Public Ministry.
- During the visit, the minister oversaw the first Mega ALEGRA intercultural Public Defense center, which provides free legal assistance in Spanish and shipibo-konibo.
- Martínez also reviewed EsSalud’s Prevenir program results and inspected the Flagrancy Unit with Ucayali court president Hermógenes Lima Chayña.
