Peru Keeps Coastal El Niño Alert as Risk Persists Into 2027

Forecasters see neutral central-Pacific conditions through June, with rising odds of a broader El Niño from July.

Overview

  • ENFEN, which issued Official Communiqué No. 07-2026 on Friday, kept the coastal El Niño alert and said the event is very likely to last into January 2027 with a chance of moderate strength in June or July, while urging authorities to prepare and setting April 30 for its next update.
  • Between April and June, northern coastal Peru can expect normal to above-normal rain mostly as isolated bursts near the end of the wet season, and warmer-than-normal air along the entire coast.
  • In ocean outlooks, conditions in the central Pacific should stay neutral in May and June, then odds rise from July for a basin-wide El Niño that could peak in November and December and extend into early 2027.
  • Hydrologists expect rivers in the Pacific watershed to run near normal levels, though some northern rivers could see brief increases that may affect low-lying towns and farms.
  • For fisheries, anchoveta in the north–central stock are projected to cluster within about 30 nautical miles of the coast in the coming weeks, and bonito should remain available along the shoreline, guiding where fleets plan their trips.
