Peru Investigates Two Inmate Deaths at El Milagro and Challapalca

Prosecutors are directing forensic reviews under tightened prison controls.

Overview

  • At Trujillo’s El Milagro prison, inmate C. J. G. L., 32, serving a 20‑year sentence for aggravated robbery, was found dead in the pavilion 15 yard at 9:20 a.m. during visiting hours on February 22.
  • INPE referred the Trujillo case to the Fiscalía de Flagrancia de Trujillo and imposed restricted visits, exhaustive searches and a preventive lockdown to preserve internal order.
  • At the maximum‑security Challapalca prison, Willy Ricardo Vargas Paredes, 38, was discovered hanged in his pavilion 2 cell on February 22, and investigators are assessing suicide versus possible third‑party involvement.
  • Depincri Tacna’s homicide unit, Oficri criminalists and provincial fiscal Sandra Nalvarte Apaza carried out procedures at Challapalca and transferred the body to the Tacna morgue for the legally required autopsy.
  • The incidents follow earlier fatalities at both facilities, with Challapalca now reporting three deaths in under two months and El Milagro recording multiple deaths last year and a second case this year.
