Peru Installs First 28 Electoral Tribunals for 2026 Regional and Municipal Vote

The JNE activated first‑instance watchdogs to enforce campaign rules across publicity, propaganda, neutrality, surveys, sanctions.

Overview

  • JNE President Roberto Burneo Bermejo led a virtual oath ceremony for the 28 tribunal presidents, who immediately installed their panels and began exercising functions.
  • Under Resolution Nº 0097-2026-JNE, the bodies will rule in first instance on state publicity, electoral propaganda, neutrality and surveys, with oversight and sanctioning powers.
  • Each tribunal is tripartite, comprising a superior judge as president, a superior prosecutor as second member, and a citizen selected by public sortition through RENIEC and the JNE.
  • In Tumbes, the designated president did not attend the installation, prompting the exceptional swearing‑in of the second and third members plus the secretary to preserve continuity.
  • The 28 installed tribunals are the first phase of 91 planned jurisdictions, with the remaining 63 scheduled for May 15, 2026, ahead of the October 4, 2026 elections.
