Overview
- The Ministry of Production extended a targeted suspension of anchoveta fishing by 15 days, running from May 27 through June 10, for waters between 06°S and 14°S within the first 30 nautical miles.
- IMARPE reported intensified warm conditions, including warm/Kelvin waves, that are pushing anchoveta into deeper and more southerly waters, reducing coastal upwelling and increasing the presence of juveniles in fishing areas.
- Produce and IMARPE framed the move as precautionary, adaptive management aimed at protecting recruitment and stock renewal by limiting juvenile bycatch during altered ocean conditions.
- The measure affects Peru’s main fishery that supports the fishmeal and fish oil export sector; earlier season landings totaled about 450,000–470,000 tonnes, roughly 24% of the season quota, and the sector accounts for around 1.5% of GDP and about 250,000 jobs.
- Authorities noted IMARPE’s scientific monitoring and recent ISO 9001:2015 certification as the technical basis for the closure, and climate outlooks that raise the probability of El Niño later this year make further measures or supply impacts a key risk to watch.
