Overview
- ENFEN confirmed on Monday that the coastal El Niño has reached moderate intensity after repeated ocean warming observations near Paita and declared ongoing biweekly monitoring.
- IMARPE and ENFEN reported strong thermal anomalies with subsurface pockets as much as 7–8°C above normal and surface sectors around +4°C that concentrate the warming off northern Peru.
- Senamhi issued red alerts for high daytime temperatures for June 10–12, noted prolonged warm nights in Lima and Callao, and warned of coastal highs up to about 35°C.
- Short-term weather is variable because a South Pacific anticyclone will bring cold winds, fog and dust in the next days even as the broader El Niño raises risks to fisheries, coastal crops and public health.
- Forecasts carry uncertainty because of the spring predictability barrier though the OMM assigns high chances of El Niño developing this winter and agencies caution the event could strengthen or last into early 2027 so preparedness and drainage and fisheries planning are advised.
