Overview
- INEI published first results at the end of May reporting a resident population of 34,157,732, of which 32,706,028 were enumerated in the field and 1,451,704 were estimated as omitted (4.25%).
- The share of people aged 60 and over rose from 11.7% in 2017 to 14.8% in 2025, and INEI projects that by 2040 those 60+ will outnumber people under 15 years, signaling faster aging and a shrinking young cohort.
- Lima Metropolitan concentrates about 10.13 million people (nearly 29.7% of the total) while departments such as Puno and Moquegua show the highest ageing ratios and Amazonian regions remain comparatively younger.
- The census counted roughly 1,039,000 foreign residents, nearly 900,000 of whom are Venezuelan, but INEI warned this figure may be underestimated because some people lacked documents or declined to participate.
- INEI flagged 360 districts with territorial demarcation problems that must be settled before the end of June to assign population figures and finalize Foncomun municipal transfers, and it will release more variables and an interactive platform on July 10–11.
