Peru Air Force Mi-17 Crash Kills 15 on Relief Flight

The helicopter lost contact between Pisco and Chala during a flood-response mission.

  • The Air Force located the wreckage after hours of searching and confirmed four crew members and 11 passengers were dead.
  • The crew was identified as Major Sergio Paucar Centurión, Ensign Luis Huertas Cárcamo, and two noncommissioned officers, Kamila Anchapuri Jove and Leiner Aguirre Huamán.
  • Passenger fatalities included FAP Colonel Javier Nole Gonzales and civilians, among them six adolescents aged 14 to 17 and a 3-year-old child.
  • The Mi-17 departed around 4:30 p.m. Sunday and was also slated to support a cadet parachute-training course.
  • The service activated the national search-and-rescue system and says it has contacted victims’ families to provide support and priority updates.
