Person of Interest Held After School Officer’s Gun Goes Missing in Arlington Heights

The unrecovered gun triggered an internal review with extra patrols on campus.

Overview

  • District leaders confirmed late Tuesday that police have a person of interest in custody and that the missing service weapon is not inside Forest View Education Center.
  • Police say the school resource officer removed his gun in a restroom before dismissal Monday and discovered it missing shortly after students left.
  • Investigators reviewed hallway video showing only a few people entered that restroom, and K9 teams from Arlington Heights, Cook County Sheriff’s Police, and Palatine Police searched the building and grounds without finding the firearm.
  • Classes for the Specialized Schools at Forest View were canceled Tuesday out of caution, affecting programs including the Academy at Forest View, the International Newcomer Academy, Vanguard School, Life, and the Young Adult Program.
  • The Arlington Heights Police Department called the incident unfortunate and embarrassing, opened a review of weapon-handling practices, increased the police presence on campus, and asked the public for tips.
