  • Perplexity launched Hybrid Compute in its Mac app on Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2026, and the feature begins tasks in the cloud then shifts sensitive steps to run on an Apple silicon Mac.
  • A local Privacy Gate uses an on‑device PII classifier to detect names, addresses, account numbers and other sensitive elements and can mask them, keep processing local, refuse the action, or ask the user for consent.
  • At launch three local models are supported — Google’s Gemma E4B, Alibaba’s Qwen3.6 35B‑A3B, and a Perplexity post‑trained Qwen3.6 35B — and Perplexity offers one‑click model installs with no charges for tokens generated by those local runs.
