Overview
- The Department of Defense on Aug. 14 signed two seven-year framework agreements with Boeing and RTX that authorize early ramp-up of SM‑3 component production before final contracts are in place.
- The deals target avionics and ejector assemblies that Boeing will supply to Raytheon for the SM‑3 Block IB and the larger, higher-performance Block IIA used on Aegis ships and Aegis Ashore sites.
- Frameworks are not definitive purchase contracts and neither the Pentagon nor Boeing disclosed dollar amounts or quantities, but the agreements let suppliers invest in capacity now while multiyear terms are negotiated.
- The move builds on recent Pentagon steps to shore up the missile-defense industrial base, including an MDA award to Raytheon for Block IIA production and concerns about depleted interceptor stocks after sustained operational use since April 2024.
- If implemented, the frameworks could speed deliveries by stabilizing supply chains and justifying hires and factory upgrades, but rebuilding interceptor inventories will still take years and depends on congressional appropriations and final multiyear awards.
