Overview
- The Defense Department's Office of Strategic Capital issued a conditional loan commitment of up to $820 million to Performance Drone Works, announced July 31, to expand large-scale domestic manufacturing of drone and robotics components.
- The commitment is conditional on customary financial, legal, technical, and due-diligence steps before financial close, and private capital has been pledged alongside the OSC financing though its size and timing were not disclosed.
- PDW plans to use its Drone Factory 01 in Huntsville, Alabama, to produce propulsion, power and control, vision systems and other components for Group 1 (0–20 lbs) and Group 2 (21–55 lbs) uncrewed aerial systems and to supply multiple U.S. manufacturers.
- Officials say the financing complements Pentagon efforts such as the Blue UAS List and the Drone Dominance Program to reduce dependence on foreign-controlled supply chains and favor trusted, American-made systems.
- The deal faces implementation risk because the loan has not closed, but if completed it could ease component bottlenecks, speed deliveries for defense and public-safety users, and create manufacturing jobs in Huntsville.
