Pennsylvania Primary Is May 19: Deadlines, Rules and Races to Watch

Only party members can vote under the state’s closed‑primary rules.

Overview

  • With the primary set for Tuesday, May 19, voters must register or update their registration by Monday, May 4.
  • Mail voting requires two steps on time: apply for a mail‑in or absentee ballot by 5 p.m. on May 12, then make sure your completed ballot reaches your county office by 8 p.m. on May 19.
  • To count a mail ballot, use the privacy envelope and sign and date the outer envelope, as counties can reject ballots with missing information.
  • Polls run from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., and anyone in line by 8 p.m. can vote; only registered Democrats and Republicans may vote in their party primaries.
  • Key contests include an open Democratic race in Philadelphia’s 3rd Congressional District following Dwight Evans’ retirement, while Gov. Josh Shapiro, Treasurer Stacy Garrity and Lt. Gov. Austin Davis face no primary challengers; Philadelphia voters will also decide charter changes to create a city‑run retirement savings board and to make the Youth Ombudsman office permanent.
