Penn State Names Alum Tanisha Wright Women’s Basketball Head Coach

The former WNBA champion, most recently a Chicago Sky assistant, will be introduced March 23 following a search focused on her candidacy.

Overview

  • Penn State announced the hire with athletic director Pat Kraft praising Wright’s ties to the program and professional pedigree.
  • Wright starred for the Lady Lions from 2001–05, earning three First-Team All-Big Ten honors and three Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year awards.
  • Her 14-year WNBA playing career included seven All-Defensive selections and a 2010 championship with the Seattle Storm.
  • Wright’s coaching résumé spans college and the WNBA, including assistant roles at Charlotte, the Las Vegas Aces and the Chicago Sky, plus three seasons as Atlanta Dream head coach (48–68) with two playoff trips.
  • She succeeds Carolyn Kieger, who was fired March 5 after a 84–123 tenure, as the program seeks its first NCAA Tournament berth since 2014; a person with direct knowledge said no search firm was used and Kelly Mazzante was contacted.
