Penguins Recall Sergei Murashov After Bench Injury to Stuart Skinner

The move positions a top prospect to cover during Stuart Skinner’s current absence.

Pittsburgh, which recalled goaltender Sergei Murashov on Tuesday, also reassigned Taylor Gauthier to the minors in a corresponding move.
Skinner was struck by a puck near his left eye while on the bench Saturday, leading to swelling that kept him out Sunday as Arturs Silovs started again and nearby call-up Taylor Gauthier dressed as the backup.
Murashov, 22, has excelled in the AHL with a .922 save percentage, 2.13 GAA, three shutouts and a 23-8-3 record in 35 games, and he logged five NHL appearances earlier this season with a 21-save shutout on Nov. 16.
With New Jersey next on Thursday and a weekend back-to-back against Washington, Murashov could see a start if Skinner is not cleared to return.
The Penguins are one win from clinching a playoff berth, so any shift in the crease now weighs immediate results against a late look at their top goaltending prospect.
