Pemex Sees Sharp April Drop in Refining Output and Exports

Safety incidents at Dos Bocas combined with a government policy to prioritize crude for domestic refineries have shrunk exportable volumes, reducing fuel output and export revenue.

Overview

  • Pemex reported total hydrocarbon production of about 1.651 million barrels per day in April 2026, a 0.2% monthly dip but roughly a 1.4% rise year on year.
  • Crude processing in the national refining system fell 9.4% month on month to about 1.067 million barrels per day in April 2026, with overall refinery utilization around 54%.
  • The Olmeca (Dos Bocas) refinery recorded its weakest month since August 2025 at about 147,498 barrels per day, a roughly 21% drop from March that Mexican authorities link to March fires that disrupted operations.
  • Gasoline and diesel output hit six‑month lows in April 2026 with 388,131 bpd of gasoline and 260,882 bpd of diesel, while crude exports fell to 418,284 bpd—the lowest April since 1990.
  • Exports to the United States plunged to 173,376 bpd in April 2026, a 36‑year low, Europe received about 181,637 bpd for the first time in recordkeeping, and natural gas production rose about 8.7% year on year, all of which tighten revenues and fuel supply choices for Mexico.
