Pedestrian Killed by Falling Parapet at 17-Storey SRA Tower in Mumbai

Authorities removed the unstable parapet section and have begun FIR registration while BMC and SRA prepare a structural inspection.

Overview

  • A 55-year-old man, identified as Abdul Wahab, was struck and fatally injured when a chunk of plaster and concrete fell from the terrace parapet of Galaxy Apartment in Chunabhatti on Friday, June 19.
  • Bystanders rushed Wahab to Sion Hospital in a private vehicle but doctors declared him brought dead on arrival and no other injuries were reported at the site.
  • Mumbai Fire Brigade crews assessed the tower, pulled down the remaining hanging parapet using specialised safety gear, and cordoned off the surrounding area to prevent further harm.
  • Chunabhatti police said FIR registration is under way and civic agencies have notified the Slum Rehabilitation Authority with BMC and SRA inspections planned to determine cause and responsibility.
  • The building’s SRA status and residents’ complaints about cracks have raised broader safety concerns, following earlier fatal falling-debris incidents in the city that prompted legal and structural scrutiny.
