‘Peace Dog’ Aloka Briefly Rejoins Monks After Surgery as Walk for Peace Moves Through North Carolina

The group advances through North Carolina toward a mid-February finish in Washington to seek federal recognition of Vesak.

Overview

  • Aloka underwent orthopedic surgery on Jan. 12 at the Charleston Veterinary Referral Center and began early rehabilitation with therapies including massage and red-light treatment.
  • After a short reunion with supporters and the monks in Charlotte, Aloka returned to Charleston to continue recovery under guidance that limits him to brief walks during the first week.
  • The monks reported that Aloka is healing well and in good spirits, with a gradual increase in activity expected as his rehabilitation progresses.
  • The Walk for Peace reached the Charlotte area with large turnouts and police escorts, and the route now points toward Greensboro, Raleigh and on to Virginia.
  • The 2,300-mile, roughly 120-day trek began Oct. 26 in Fort Worth and targets a mid-February arrival in Washington, where the monks plan to petition Congress for recognition of the Buddha’s birth and enlightenment holiday.
