Paul McCartney Compares Taylor Swift’s Global Fame to The Beatles

He framed the comparison as admiration from an elder musician who says he will only offer guidance if asked.

Overview

  • This week on BBC Radio 2 McCartney said he sees a clear parallel between Taylor Swift’s worldwide fame and the level of fame The Beatles once had and added that he does not think she needs his advice.
  • McCartney described himself as the “older brother” or “more like the grandad” to that generation and said he would give advice only if artists asked for it.
  • He recounted meeting Swift, Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo and Sabrina Carpenter at a party hosted by his wife Nancy Shevell and daughter Stella McCartney and praised their voices and talent.
  • McCartney also said he has heard an unreleased Prince rehearsal cover of the Beatles’ “The Long and Winding Road” and suggested he may approach Prince’s estate about an official release.
  • The remarks come as McCartney promotes his new album and add to wider discussions about generational fame after Swift recently broke Beatles-era chart records by placing seven songs simultaneously in the Global Chart Top 10.
