- The IOC Athletes’ Commission selected Gasol at its meeting in Milan to fill the athletes’ seat on the Executive Board.
- Gasol was also elected president of the IOC Athletes’ Commission, a role that confers the board position through LA 2028.
- He is the first male athlete in 14 years to hold this seat, succeeding Emma Terho, Angela Ruggiero, Claudia Bokel and Kirsty Coventry.
- The Executive Board comprises 15 members, and Gasol said it is “a great moment” to take on leading the commission in an IOC statement.
- The two-time NBA champion and five-time Olympian was elected an IOC member by athletes at the Tokyo 2021 Games and entered the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2023.
