Patrick Balkany to Appear in Nanterre on Feb. 20 as Court Sets Calendar in Two Public-Funds Cases

Prosecutors have narrowed the case to alleged misappropriation after dropping illegal interest-taking and laundering counts.

Overview

  • The Nanterre criminal court has summoned the former Levallois-Perret mayor for a scheduling hearing to set dates for two trials over alleged misappropriation of public funds.
  • One case, known as the chauffeurs dossier, alleges municipal police officers were reassigned as personal drivers for Balkany between 2010 and 2015 following a 2012 union report and a 2013 judicial inquiry.
  • A second case concerns the continued municipal pay of former official Renaud Guillot-Corail after his 2012 retirement, reportedly totaling about €300,000, and was brought by direct summons from the prosecutor.
  • The Nanterre prosecutor announced a non-lieu on suspected illegal taking of interest and money laundering, while maintaining the public-funds charges; Balkany’s lawyers call the accusations unfounded and criticize procedural delays.
  • Separately, a court in Évreux granted Balkany conditional release to serve his remaining 18 months at home, a decision the prosecutor has appealed, as he remains an active local political figure ahead of the March municipal elections.
