Passenger Boat Capsizes Near Alcatraz; One Dead, Up to Two Missing

Investigators and rescuers continue an active multi‑agency search as they probe whether a reported onboard fire or another factor caused the capsizing.

Overview

  • Rescuers found a three‑deck passenger boat largely submerged about 550 meters from Alcatraz after an emergency call shortly after 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, and most of the 19 people aboard were pulled from the water.
  • One person later died of injuries sustained in the incident and officials say between one and two passengers remain unaccounted for as search operations continue.
  • San Francisco Fire Department, the U.S. Coast Guard, Oakland police and other agencies deployed divers, helicopters and multiple boats to recover survivors and search for the missing.
  • Fire chief Dean Crispen said crews initially received reports of a fire on board but that investigators have not found current evidence confirming an onboard blaze.
  • Authorities have taken the vessel and witness accounts into an ongoing inquiry to determine cause and safety lessons, and families of those on board are being helped by city responders.
