Partners Arrested in Two Mumbai-Area Thefts; Police Recover About ₹50 Lakh in Valuables

The cases underscore how trusted access can enable theft by someone already inside the victim’s life.

Overview

  • Mumbai police arrested 43-year-old Mazhar Ahmed Ramzan Ali Ansari on suspicion of stealing valuables worth about ₹30 lakh from his girlfriend’s Sakinaka flat after she refused him a loan.
  • Police said they recovered roughly ₹27 lakh in jewellery from him after he used a spare key to enter the flat, and a court remanded him to police custody.
  • In a separate case, Raigad police arrested 29-year-old Rani Vinayak Chavan and aide Pawan Kumar Jaiswal within hours of an Alibaug theft and recovered valuables worth ₹23.05 lakh.
  • Officers said the Alibaug haul included 182 grams of gold, ₹4 lakh in cash and three phones, and the pair were intercepted in Turbhe as they allegedly prepared to leave for Uttar Pradesh.
  • Investigators credited technical surveillance, call-record checks and quick coordination across units, with the Alibaug case registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, India’s new criminal code.
