Overview
- Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla constituted a 31-member Joint Parliamentary Committee to examine three bills, led by BJP MP Aparajita Sarangi.
- The committee will scrutinize the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill proposing removal of a Prime Minister, Chief Minister or minister after 30 consecutive days in custody for offences punishable by five years or more.
- Most major opposition parties, including Congress, TMC and DMK, are boycotting the panel, with Congress claiming over 340 INDIA-bloc MPs are staying out and calling it a “rubber stamp.”
- Membership is dominated by the BJP and its NDA allies, reported as 26 of 31, though Supriya Sule, Asaduddin Owaisi, Harsimrat Kaur Badal and nominated member Sudha Murty are on the panel.
- The JPC has been asked to submit recommendations during the Winter Session after the bills were introduced in August by Home Minister Amit Shah, alongside measures on Jammu and Kashmir and Union Territories.
