Parliament Marks 24 Years Since 2001 Attack With Cross-Party Tributes

A CISF honour guard with a minute of silence at Samvidhan Sadan framed leaders’ pledge to confront terrorism.

Overview

  • Vice President C P Radhakrishnan led the ceremony as Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and senior ministers offered floral tributes.
  • Central Industrial Security Force personnel presented a guard of honour, followed by a minute of silence at the memorial outside the old Parliament building.
  • Lok Sabha also recorded tributes under Speaker Om Birla, who skipped the Samvidhan Sadan event to attend former Speaker Shivraj Patil’s funeral in Latur.
  • President Droupadi Murmu saluted the fallen in a message on X and reaffirmed India’s commitment to fight terrorism in all its forms.
  • Reports differ on the 2001 toll—some list nine dead and others about 14—while all five attackers were shot dead in the forecourt without entering the building, and families of the fallen voiced pride in the continued remembrance.
