Park Rangers Seek Couple After Tourist Damages Hopi Headpiece at Grand Canyon

The Fred Kabotie headpiece is now secured by museum staff as investigators ask for tips by email not social-media naming.

Overview

  • A visitor damaged a Hopi headpiece on June 17 after climbing onto handcrafted furniture inside the Desert View Watchtower and knocking the piece to the floor.
  • The headpiece, made by Hopi artist Fred Kabotie, broke in two places and suffered damage in three other areas and is now held by Grand Canyon museum staff for assessment.
  • Park staff treated the man for minor injuries but he and an adult woman left the watchtower before rangers could identify them or notify law enforcement.
  • Rangers released suspect descriptions for a white man in his 60s–70s and a white woman in her late 30s–40s and asked anyone with information to email GRCA_Information@nps.gov.
  • Officials said the incident shows how climbing on protected furnishings can harm irreplaceable cultural items and create safety hazards, and they urged the public to avoid social-media naming while the investigation continues.
