Park Police Officer Released After D.C. Ambush Shooting

A multiagency manhunt now focuses on two suspects in an attack on an undercover officer.

Overview

  • Working an undercover case in an unmarked white Tesla, a U.S. Park Police officer was shot in Southeast Washington around 7:30 p.m. Monday near Queens Stroll Place SE and Hillside Road SE.
  • Park Police leaders said at least two gunmen ambushed the vehicle, the wounded officer drove a short distance, received first aid at a nearby stop, and was flown by USPP helicopter to a hospital.
  • The department confirmed the injuries were not life-threatening and disclosed Tuesday morning that the veteran officer had been released from the hospital.
  • Police are searching for two suspects described as Black males, one in a white hoodie with blue jeans and one in all black with a white stripe on the sleeves and pant legs, and officials said the officer appeared to have been targeted.
  • MPD and the FBI are assisting as officers sealed off multiple blocks, canvassed for surveillance video, and asked witnesses to come forward, while investigators have not identified a motive or shared details of the underlying Park Police probe.
