Paris Engineer Wins Picasso in €100 Raffle

The sold-out raffle channels almost all proceeds to Alzheimer’s research.

Overview

  • Ari Hodara was selected Tuesday at Christie’s in Paris and the painting will remain there for now.
  • His €100 ticket won Picasso’s 1941 gouache Tête de Femme, a portrait of Dora Maar painted in wartime Paris.
  • Organizers sold all 120,000 tickets, raising €12 million, with €1 million to Opera Gallery and about €11 million to Fondation Recherche Alzheimer.
  • Opera Gallery pegs the work’s public value near €1.45 million, and Picasso’s grandson says it is worth more than that.
  • This was the third “1 Picasso for 100 euros” raffle since 2013, following drives that funded heritage work in Lebanon and water and hygiene projects in Africa.
