Paramount Theatre Closes for 11-Month Interior Restoration

The downtown Austin venue is undergoing a full preservation and technical upgrade to protect original finishes and improve accessibility.

Overview

  • The Paramount closed to the public for an estimated 10–11 month restoration that began after a free Last Call open house on Monday night and moves programming out of the building starting June 16.
  • Work will replace all seating with custom, more accessible chairs, overhaul sound and lighting systems, install a new HVAC to stabilize temperature and humidity, and repair and restore plaster, paint and decorative fixtures.
  • The project will finish a long-planned third-floor ballroom that was originally in the 1915 design and will clean and preserve the hand-painted 1915 fire curtain found in the rafters.
  • Paramount-produced shows will continue at partner sites across Austin, including the State Theatre, Bullock IMAX, Hogg Memorial Auditorium, the AISD Performing Arts Center and Radio East to minimize disruption for audiences.
  • The 'Shine On' capital campaign has raised $31 million toward a $66 million project goal plus a $10 million endowment and will continue fundraising during the closure to cover restoration costs and long-term support.
