Paramount Brings 'Top Gun' and 'Maverick' Back to Theaters for One Week Starting May 13

The studio is using the anniversary event to energize the franchise during development of a third film.

Overview

  • The one-week 40th‑anniversary run pairs the 1986 original with 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick, with tickets going on sale Tuesday, April 21, according to Paramount and Tom Cruise’s post.
  • The original will screen in premium and immersive formats, including IMAX, Dolby Cinema, D-BOX, 4DX and ScreenX, which marks the first time it has been offered in several of these formats.
  • Paramount also set a Top Gun Day on May 13 that offers a limited-edition collectible print at participating theaters while supplies last.
  • Paramount confirmed at CinemaCon that Top Gun 3 is in development with Tom Cruise and producer Jerry Bruckheimer attached, with Ehren Kruger writing as trade reports suggest Joseph Kosinski may not return to direct.
  • Box-office analysts say the brief event should deliver a modest boost, noting Maverick’s about $1.49 billion global haul and projecting the franchise’s domestic total likely crosses $900 million but not $1 billion during the weeklong re-release, with India screenings starting May 15.
