Overview
- On Monday the Fiscalía presented closing arguments asking the Tribunal de Sentencia in Asunción to sentence Edgardo Kueider and Iara Guinsel Costa to two years and two months for attempted contraband.
- Prosecutors say the pair were stopped at the Puente de la Amistad on December 4, 2024 with a bag holding about US$211,102 plus large sums in pesos and guaraníes, which Paraguayan law treats as undeclared merchandise.
- Kueider and Guinsel remain under house arrest in Asunción and any prison term would be reduced by the roughly 18 months they have already spent under that restriction.
- Paraguayan authorities have also charged them with alleged money‑laundering tied to purchases of apartments and parking spaces, and an Argentine federal judge has sought Kueider's extradition, which will wait until Paraguayan proceedings conclude.
- The defense has asked for acquittal, arguing there was no criminal intent and only minor taxes might have been due, and the court will hear fiscal replica and defense dúplica on July 13 before potentially issuing a verdict.
