Parachutist Snags on Mexico City Traffic Light, Then Is Released Without Sanction

Aviation regulators reported no authorization or radar trace for any aircraft linked to the jump, leaving the launch point unresolved.

Overview

  • C5 surveillance video captured a parachutist becoming entangled on a traffic-light structure at Balderas and Juárez in the Centro Histórico during the early hours of December 9.
  • Police, firefighters and transit personnel responded, and bystanders attempted to free the man before authorities secured the scene.
  • The individual, identified by authorities as a 36-year-old U.S. citizen, was presented to a civic judge and released after officials found no injuries or damage.
  • The man told police he had jumped from an ultralight aircraft, but AFAC and SENEAM said they neither authorized such a flight nor detected any aircraft in the area.
  • Authorities said the parachute equipment was secured and removed, and some media reported the parachutist’s name as Miles Pack, which has not been officially confirmed.
