Overview
- A pantograph on an Avlo train became caught on the overhead catenary near O Irixo on Wednesday, July 8, immobilizing the train and cutting traffic on the Ourense–Santiago high-speed line.
- Renfe found damaged pantographs on that Avlo and on at least three other trains that passed the same point and has replaced the affected equipment before returning units to service.
- The stoppage created cascading delays, cancellations and transbordos that left thousands of passengers affected and produced on-board complaints about heat and poor information.
- Adif removed the stranded train overnight, restored temporary tension on one track and is carrying out a definitive catenary repair planned for night work while single-line working continues between Ourense and O Irixo.
- Separately, a lightning strike on an Alvia and a cable theft on the Madrid–Andalucía corridor have shown how weather and vandalism can damage catenary and signalling and force slow manual running or line limits that widen delays.
