Panamanian Court Convicts Two Men in Killing and Robbery of Spanish Tourist

Convictions close the oral trial with prison terms to be set at a later individualization hearing.

Overview

  • A Tribunal de Juicio declared Antony Planes and Joshua Parris guilty on June 28, 2026, for the 23 July 2024 homicide and robbery of Eneritz Argintxona.
  • Eneritz Argintxona, a 30-year-old from Erandio, was found dead on July 26, 2024, and the autopsy said she died of severe cranioencephalic trauma after her body lay for three days in an isolated area of Isla Carenero.
  • Prosecutors said Planes struck Argintxona from behind with a machete and that the other defendant seized her bag containing an iPhone 11 Pro, a GoPro camera and headphones, facts central to the robbery charge.
  • Both men were arrested in August 2024 and ordered to preventive detention by Judge Arnulfo Ávila before a two-year legal process that culminated in the recent guilty verdicts.
  • The case provoked local protests calling for greater safety on Bocas del Toro and now moves to an individualization hearing where judges will fix each defendant’s prison term, which will determine the final legal outcome.
