Palestinian Journalists Syndicate Reports 108 Attacks on Reporters in West Bank

Overview

• The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate said its July report recorded 108 separate attacks on Palestinian journalists and media workers in the occupied West Bank last month.
• The syndicate’s Freedoms Committee listed specific violations including 58 brief detentions or reporting restrictions, 11 settler attacks, 12 incidents of stun grenades or tear gas used at press crews, six beatings with four causing bleeding injuries, and several raids, expulsions and equipment seizures or destructions.
• Rights groups report that more than 270 journalists have been killed in Gaza since October 2023, and Al Jazeera has confirmed that 12 of its own journalists were among those killed.
• The syndicate said the pattern of attacks and operational restrictions is making it increasingly difficult for journalists to document Israeli military raids and settler violence and demanded accountability and protections for the press.
• Reduced independent coverage risks leaving violations unrecorded and could heighten calls for international scrutiny, since rights groups and media organisations have already sought legal and investigative avenues in response to rising attacks on reporters.
